4 Common mistakes people make when locking their premises

Print

In recent times, I have had numerous complains of how common house and office break-ins have become. Some blame it on sub-standard locks and padlocks made in Kenya where else some blame it on idle and unemployed youths trying to get hustle their way out of poverty, albeit illegally.

However, have we ever sat and thought that we could great contributors to our own downfall.

Tenacity Locks Limited has compiled a list of the common mistakes that most people make when locking their homes and offices alike. I bet you are going to be reading through this article and thinking, “Yeah, this is me. I really need to change”.

Below are the four most common mistakes that people make when locking their premises.

1. Sharing and Trusting Too Many People With Your Keys

Many a times, a customer will visit our premises asking for a padlock that cannot easily be picked. He/she will go ahead to narrate how they had their padlock picked, goods stolen and the padlock locked back in place without any signs of struggle or forceful entry. We will then go ahead to ask them how many people they entrust with that key, and where else the list may not be long, trusting other people with your keys is a recipe for disaster.

Someone accessing your premises may be simple as picking your keys, having a look at the keys number and handing them back to you. They will then go to a locksmith and have you key duplicated. For others, it may be them duplicating your keys and handing you back the original keys. Try in as much as possible to entrust your keys with as few people and people who are as close to you as possible.

2. Buying Your Locks And Padlocks From Unscrupulous Sellers

When most of us need a car, they go to a car bazaar or a showroom. When we need meat, we go to butchery. When we are hungry, presumably we go to a hotel or restaurant. Why then is it that when we need, most of us buy them along the streets from unscrupulous sellers yet they want to lock household items worth thousands and thousands of shillings? Why is it then that we will then walk into a general hardware with a thousand other different items with a seller who has little or no knowledge about the lock or padlocks they are about to sell to us?

You should then consider buying padlocks from a company that specializes in the sale of locks, padlocks and other door accessories like Tenacity Locks Ltd.

3. Failing To Invest In A Good And Secure Lock/Padlock

A padlock or lock is not something that you will buy each and every day. It is therefore important for us to have the right attitude when getting one as it could mean the difference between us retaining our hard-earned household items and finding our house swept clean. It therefore amazes me that sometimes someone will walk into a sales outlet and insist on a very good padlock that is below Kshs. 100.00. This is the sort of attitude that leads to buying inferior locks and padlocks that we use to lock our houses.

4. Failure To Do Enough Research

Going that extra mile always pays off. I have served many clients who went that extra mile and searched for locks and padlocks and locks over the internet. This is just an example of how going that extra mile helps. Had they not done that they could have probably have settled for a mediocre lock or padlock.

I even find clients who over-rely on technicians (fundis) to do all the purchases for the locks when building. What eventually happens is that the technician will choose the cheapest lock and try to save on the allocated budget for the locks so that he can pocket the money. This leaves one exposed to break-ins due to a mediocre lock. As a Landlord or the occupant, just go that extra mile and do your own research.
